Microplate Shakers

Microplate Shakers

Microplate shakers are precision laboratory instruments designed to provide uniform and reproducible agitation of samples in multi-well plates. By ensuring efficient and consistent mixing, these devices enhance reaction kinetics and sample homogeneity, which is essential for high-throughput biochemical assays, molecular biology workflows, and screening applications.

Design Features

These compact benchtop instruments typically operate using orbital or reciprocal shaking motions, with adjustable speeds ranging from approximately 200 to 3,500 rpm and orbit diameters between 2 and 19 mm. Many models incorporate PID-controlled temperature regulation (ambient +5 °C to 60 °C) and programmable digital timers (from 1 minute up to 96 hours), allowing precise control of incubation and mixing conditions.

Microplate shakers can accommodate one to four microplates, including deep-well and PCR plates. Advanced systems—such as those designed for integration into incubators or cold rooms—feature non-slip platforms, heated lids to minimize condensation, and serial interfaces compatible with automated laboratory workflows. Their low-profile designs (often below 150 mm) allow operation in environments where space constraints or specific atmospheric conditions must be maintained.

Biochemical Applications

Microplate shakers are widely used in immunoassays and enzymatic assays such as ELISA, where consistent mixing ensures uniform reagent distribution and contributes to reduced assay variability, with coefficients of variation often below 5% for absorbance measurements at 450 nm. In molecular biology, high-speed shaking (typically 1,500–2,500 rpm) facilitates sample preparation steps including PCR setup, cell lysis, and protein digestion, preventing concentration gradients in viscous lysates.

In microbiology and cell culture studies, lower shaking speeds (approximately 300–800 rpm) support microbial growth or metabolomic experiments by maintaining homogeneous nutrient and oxygen distribution. Additionally, microplate shakers are essential in high-throughput screening workflows, enabling efficient mixing of beads, nanoparticles, or reagents without splashing or cross-contamination between wells.
