Human Microglia

Human microglia are the CNS-resident myeloid immune cells, originating from embryonic yolk-sac–derived erythro-myeloid progenitors (EMPs). They contribute to brain development, immune surveillance, synaptic remodeling, homeostasis, and responses to injury. Microglial phenotypes are highly plastic and heterogeneous, varying with CNS region, developmental stage, age, microenvironment, and disease state.

Key Features

  • CNS-Resident Immune Cells : Commonly expressed microglial markers include P2RY12, TMEM119, CX3CR1, SALL1, and HEXB, although their expression can change with developmental and functional state.

  • Functional Plasticity : Microglia participate in phagocytosis, synaptic pruning and remodeling, neuroinflammatory signaling, clearance of cellular debris, and maintenance of neuronal and CNS homeostasis.
