Homogenizers are laboratory instruments and mechanical sample preparation devices designed to disrupt tissues, lyse cells, reduce particle size, and generate uniform suspensions from biological or chemical samples. They are widely used in molecular biology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, and pharmaceutical laboratories to prepare samples for downstream applications such as protein extraction, nucleic acid purification, microscopy, and analytical testing.

Homogenization is a critical pre-analytical step because many biological materials—such as tissues, cultured cells, microorganisms, or complex formulations—are structurally heterogeneous. By applying mechanical shear, grinding, impact forces, or agitation, homogenizers convert these complex samples into reproducible and processable lysates or dispersions.

The selection of a homogenizer depends on sample type, volume, throughput, desired particle size, and sensitivity of downstream analyses.
